PEth, which is short for B-phosphatidylethanol, is a breakdown product that is only formed in the body in connection with alcohol intake. This means that PEth does not normally appear in the blood. Single instances of intoxication do not increase PEth in the blood, but long-term (> 1 week) regular overconsumption results in elevated values, and these rise the higher the alcohol consumption.
PEth can detect alcohol intake up to 4 weeks after abstinence from alcohol. The analysis is used to detect a suspected risky use of alcohol.
