Anti-TPO, or TPO-antibodies (the abbreviation ab stands for "antibodies") are so-called autoantibodies, that is, proteins that the body has formed itself that attack the body's own tissues. Autoantibodies can affect a tissue in several different ways, sometimes these destroy the tissue so that it cannot perform its task, and in other cases the autoantibodies can cause overfunctioning of the tissues. Anti-TPO means that autoantibodies have been formed against thyroid peroxidase (TPO), a substance in the thyroid gland , and can lead to hypothyroidism.
Anti-TPO is analyzed to determine the cause of hypothyroidism. In connection with abnormal test results for the thyroid hormones that are measured routinely, i.e. TSH and T4, the samples are sometimes supplemented with analysis of Anti-TPO to find out if the abnormal function is caused by an autoimmune disease.
Elevated values ̢?̢?of Anti-TPO can occur as a normal variant and are seen in 10-25% of a healthy population.
